Solidarity, resilience and optimism in the face of economic crisis and natural disasters

In the face of the economic crisis Cuba is undergoing and the effects of hurricanes and intense earthquakes, solidarity and resilience grow to pave the way to overcome and go on.

When the areas of the province of Guantánamo are still not fully recovered from the effects of hurricane Oscar, Rafael hits the west of Cuba, and finally the east of the island suffers the consequences of high intensity earthquakes.

During October 20 and 21, the municipalities of the province of Guantánamo, Imías, San Antonio del Sur, Baracoa and Maisí were hard hit by the fury of hurricane Oscar with category 1, which caused the collapse of the electrical system and land communications, floods, the destruction of houses and bridges, as well as regrettable loss of human lives.

This situation merited the immediate presence of Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermudes in the disaster areas and the prompt expression of solidarity from the rest of the country, from where aid donations were sent to the people of Guantanamo affected by the meteorological event.

Guantanamo is still not fully recovered and on November 6, Hurricane Rafael hit western Cuba, entering through the south of the province of Artemisa and also seriously affecting Mayabeque, Havana and Pinar del Rio. It entered as a category three and soon became a category two on the Saffir-Simpson scale, but sustained winds of 170 kilometers per hour caused damage to homes, electricity and water services, as well as communications.

Solidarity multiplies and brigades from several areas of the country are mobilized to contribute to the recovery of the territories affected by hurricane Rafael. On November 10, there were earthquakes of great intensity in eastern Cuba, which caused serious damage to homes and facilities in general.

The Seismological Service at the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS) reported that on Sunday morning, a strong tremor with a magnitude of 6 on the Richter scale and another of 6.8 a little later affected several provinces of eastern Cuba.

Eduardo Martinez Diaz, Vice Prime Minister of the Republic of Cuba, arrived in Pilon to evaluate the damages caused by the earthquakes and to outline the actions for the attention to the victims and the gradual recovery of this area and other affected areas in Granma province.

With the optimism that characterizes Cubans and our willpower in the face of contingencies, we will move forward in the face of the onslaught of nature and the economic crisis that has also hit us long before the meteorological and telluric events.
