It is true that garbage in the municipality of Contramaestre, in the province of Santiago de Cuba, has exceeded its storage capacity and is now covering sidewalks and sections of streets in different neighborhoods. This means that habitats for rodents, flies, and other insects, carriers of bacteria that are harmful to human health, are being created, especially now that dengue cases are appearing in some areas of the territory.
Added to this is the increase in social indiscipline in some areas surrounding the town center, where people, far from helping, worsen the situation by creating unwanted micro-dumps, since they don’t go to the designated area.
It is no secret that we have limited resources to tackle the task of sanitation, but if every person in the community, along with the other residents, increases their efforts, convinced that it can be done, then the effort will be achieved, and the conditions of the environment in which we live will improve, allowing us to breathe fresh, unpolluted air.
Given the current situation, which is causing concern and requiring action from the municipality’s main authorities, the residents of Contramaestre are called upon to undertake sanitation efforts in their various workplaces, organizations, businesses, and military institutions to curb the spread of illegal dumpsites. These sites are detrimental to human health and could lead to unwanted epidemics, especially now as we face a complex situation with shortages of certain medications.
This work must be carried out in an organized manner, with the participation of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR) in each area, the Federation of Cuban Women, the grassroots Association of Combatants of the Cuban Revolution, Party members in the local areas, and the union as the leader of the working class. Only in this way, with everyone’s contribution, can we improve the environment in which we live.
In fulfilling this important sanitation task, the local community organization plays a decisive role, with its brave workers who, with hardly any resources to do their job, face the challenge of cleaning and beautifying the city and its surroundings with creative initiatives, in order to preserve the health of the people.
