In Contramaestre, with various initiatives and a strong ability to mobilize union members and their families, the local councils in this part of eastern Cuba are demonstrating their readiness to show that “the Homeland Will Be Defended,” honoring the activities dedicated to celebrating International Workers’ Day this May Day.
These days, the 15 unions in this territory, which has over 14,000 members affiliated with the Cuban Workers’ Federation (CTC), are preparing to carry out activities that will serve as incentives to infuse the May Day commemoration with color and patriotic fervor.
The initiatives, aimed at achieving mass mobilization as an expression of the nation’s defense, are being implemented through plenary sessions at the municipal and community council levels, participation in defense activities, and a presence in various areas, such as the call for productive work this coming weekend at the self-sufficient coffee farm in the Macario area.
In addition to the activities taking place within each union, and to boost the CTC’s own membership efforts in Contramaestre, the organization anticipates that in three community councils located outside the municipal capital—Los Negros, Baire, and Laguna Blanca—union members and their families will hold rallies, events, and parades this April.
As part of the program planned by the leadership of the labor movement in this municipality to highlight the celebration of the world’s workers, a political and cultural gala featuring local artists from the cultural system is also planned.
A meeting with veterans of the organization and members of the National Association of Revolutionary and Innovative Workers (ANIR), along with a massive voluntary blood donation drive on April 28, are part of the labor union’s program of activities in this eastern Cuban municipality to celebrate May Day.
While awaiting the turnout of workers and their families this May Day, starting at 6:00 a.m. for the patriotic event, the CTC’s top leadership here emphasizes that the call for union members and the public to participate on May 30 in a massive street sweep along the Central Highway, between the Basic Food Unit and the town square, remains open.
According to local labor leaders, as in similar past celebrations, the revolutionary fervor of the residents of Contramaestre will prevail, demonstrating, amidst current challenges, that the Homeland will be defended.
