Producing Food for the People: A Priority in Contramaestre

Producing Food for the People: A Priority in Contramaestre

Based on the idea that each municipality in the province of Santiago de Cuba should be self-sufficient in terms of food—root vegetables, grains, greens, meat, and rice (the latter where possible)—Contramaestre is working diligently toward this goal, bringing fresh, high-quality products to family tables. This initiative supports the program that has been running for some time in the Santiago de Cuba region.

This commitment to food production is not just a dream; results are already visible in the Laguna Blanca agricultural hub, with the cultivation of several hectares of cassava, sweet potato, tomato, and squash, which will soon be available in markets to supply the population during these challenging times.

Workers from various sectors of the economy and services in the Contramaestre region contribute to the food production through volunteer work on weekends, especially those who live in communities near the cultivated areas. There are reasons why every workplace, agency, and state entity should contribute to agricultural production, considering that many of them have land allocated for short-cycle crops, now in the spring season. This will help improve the nutrition of their workers and supply markets with a portion of the harvest.

If everyone follows the guidelines in these areas, we are confident that there will be an increase in the expected production for this spring season, where the recent rains have improved soil moisture. Now it is up to cooperative members, individual farmers, and owners of farms and plots to choose their seeds and plant as much as possible; only in this way will we overcome the food shortage.
