The Victory of the Bay of Pigs, forever and ever

Giron Victory

The victory at Playa Girón (Bay of Pigs) on April 19, 1961, after defeating the mercenary invasion financed and militarily supported by the US government and the CIA, shows the decision of the Cuban people to defend their revolution, which was the dream of so many martyrs since October 10, 1868.

Today, as Cuba resists new forms of economic and media warfare, the spirit of Girón is reborn in every ideological barricade, in every young person who studies with patriotism, in every worker who defends their industry. Imperialism has changed its tactics, but the lesson remains intact: a united people upholding its principles is invincible. That is why Girón does not belong to the past: it is a seed of the future, a torch that illuminates the path to the next victory. The first defeat of imperialism in the Americas foretold that others would follow!

When the first mercenary bullets tore through the dawn at Playa Girón, they didn’t find a sleeping populace, but a Revolution in arms. Peasants with newly acquired rifles, militiamen in grease-stained overalls, students turned artillerymen, and soldiers of the Rebel Army rose as one against the invasion. “Homeland or Death!” ceased to be a slogan and became flesh and blood in the sandy trenches of the Ciénaga.

Fidel, with his strategic clarity, transformed every inch of land into a death trap for the invaders, while the people—now masters of their own destiny—fought with the sacred fury of those who defend what is most precious: the right to be free. In less than 72 hours, that human tide of patriotism buried forever the myth of Yankee invincibility, demonstrating that when a people rise up with reason and weapons, not even the most powerful force in the world can subdue them. Girón was, is, and will be proof: Cuba does not surrender!

Playa Girón was not just a military victory; it was a roar of dignity that transcended borders. With the smoking helmets of the defeated mercenaries and Cuban flags waving over the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, the Revolution sent a clear message to the empire and the world: “Cuba will be no one’s colony.” This was the first time in the Americas that a small, humble, but indomitable people tore off the mask of the Yankee giant and showed it that its tanks, its dollars, and its threats cannot buy the will of the people.

While imperialism counted down the hours to celebrate its triumph, Cuba wrote an eternal truth with blood and courage: before a united and revolutionary people, not even the most powerful force can prevail. Girón thus became a beacon for the oppressed of the world, irrefutable proof that when a people believes in its ideals, neither blockades, nor invasions, nor lies can break it.

More than six decades later, the victory at Playa Girón is not only historical memory, but a revolutionary compass for new generations. That feat, where a people armed with reason and rifles defeated the imperialist machine, continues to teach that sovereignty is not begged for, it is defended.

Today, as Cuba resists new forms of economic and media warfare, the spirit of Girón is reborn in every ideological barricade, in every young person who studies with patriotism, in every worker who defends their industry. Imperialism has changed its tactics, but the lesson remains intact: a united people upholding their principles is invincible.

That is why Girón does not belong to the past: it is a seed of the future, a torch that illuminates the path to the next victory. The first defeat of imperialism in the Americas foretold that others would follow!
