Alerts and preparedness for natural phenomena

An alert is always important because it can help solve a given problem if action is taken quickly enough. The municipality of Contramaestre, in the province of Santiago de Cuba, is a fairly flat area, where flooding can easily occur in the event of heavy rains caused by natural phenomena such as tropical cyclones.

In addition, a large percentage of the public sewers in this area are clogged for many reasons, although I am among those who believe it is due to a lack of systematic maintenance in the affected areas.

Let’s not forget that this time of year marks the beginning of hurricane season, and the Caribbean Sea extends to the southern coast of the province of Santiago de Cuba, allowing medium- to high-intensity natural phenomena to move freely. These storms cause enormous flooding, and if the appropriate measures are not taken now, while things are calm, the damage will be severe later.

The call extends to all businesses and organizations in this area, with priority given to the Forestry Department, which must prune the trees felled by Hurricane Melissa. The Water and Sewerage Department must also contribute by cleaning drains, storm drains, and sewers to minimize potential flooding in low-lying neighborhoods.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Services Department is vital in maintaining the cleanliness of streets, parks, and avenues, as well as collecting solid waste in areas most affected by illegal dumping. All of this must be done now, while we can, and with effective action; later will be too late. Let us remember that haste and improvisation are never helpful in the event of a hurricane warning.
