Against STIs, take the safe road

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI)

The prevention and timely treatment of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) is a major task for the Cuban health system.

STIs are a pressing health problem worldwide, with a growing number of infections and a very high mortality rate. In the case of HIV, Cuba has achieved the survival of more than 80% of diagnosed patients, and was a pioneer in the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of the disease.

The National HIV and STI Control Program was implemented in 1986. Since then, a hard work of epidemiological surveillance, specialized medical care, promotion campaigns and scientific research has been carried out.

The Santiago municipality of Contramaestre is also part of these actions, mainly through consultations in different health centers. Belkys Rodríguez Osoria, Head of the STI, HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis Program in the Baire health area, tells us that consultations are confidential and the identity of all patients is protected.

The multidisciplinary factor and psychological support are key in the treatment of patients diagnosed with STIs in the territory.
In the current year, the lack of resources and medical supplies represents a threat to the reduction of epidemiological risk.

Against this backdrop, the health authorities are calling for awareness and responsible sexual behavior.

Our country has set an ambitious goal: that by the year 2030, HIV and AIDS will not be a health problem in the national territory. The achievement of this goal, although sometimes overshadowed by material shortcomings, is presented as a commitment to eliminate the transmission of the disease and ensure the physical and psychological well-being of positive patients. In this sense, prevention will always be the safest way forward.
