Saving their industry, sugar growers' conference in Contramaestre

With the maxim of saving the sugar agro-industry, delegates from this territory of Santiago de Cuba met in the municipality of Contramaestre. In the context of the development at the base of the Third National Conference of the Sugar Workers Union, representatives of the different economic, productive and service activities attended. At the meeting they discussed the strategy to be implemented to return sugar production to the dynamism and growth of previous years.

In order to save the sugar agro-industry, men and women committed to this vital economic-productive activity of the Cuban nation are needed.

A representation of them in the municipality of Contramaestre attended the pilot assembly of the province of Santiago de Cuba corresponding to the third Conference of the National Union of Sugar Workers.

Unity, tradition, growth and diversification were the main themes of the debate, which was attended by the First Secretary of the Party in the municipality, comrade Yoelvis Suarez Zapata and Maritza Alvarez Guerra, member of the National Bureau of the union, who emphasized the main challenges of the sector.

In the municipality of Contramaestre we are working to achieve increases in the production of high quality seeds. The area dedicated to this objective has benefited from investments in irrigation and the multiplication of varieties resistant to pests and diseases. Also in the use of organic fertilizers and biopesticides.

The delegates at the Third Conference of the National Sugar Workers Union in Contramaestre made reference to this, pointing out the need for supplies at more affordable prices and the unrenounceable purpose of restarting the machinery of the América Libre sugar mill, once the “Clock of the East”.

At the meeting, the new leadership of the sugar union in the municipality was elected and Yanet Garlobo Del Toro was ratified.
