Contramaestre hosts agroecology 2022 event

Contramaestre municipality, in southeastern Cuba, developed the agroecology 2022 event objectively and according to the needs of the territory, focusing on the practice that still needs to be better used by farmers in this part of the country.

The agroecological movement has had in recent years a strengthening in its operation with achievements in socialization and implementation by farmers, an alternative that helps the welfare of the ecosystem.

Leonel Savigne Rodríguez, specialist in agroecology, science and technique of the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) in the province of Santiago de Cuba, was present at the exchange.

This year, the papers delivered at the Forum covered a wide range of topics, the results of research aimed at responding to the real needs of the Contramaestrian territory. An example of this was the work related to the gender approach in the agricultural sector of the municipality.

Women and agroecology

In this aspect, the strength of projects carried out in cooperatives in the municipality of Contramaestre was presented, where women have played a fundamental role in food production, women who use agroecological techniques to obtain their crops.

On the other hand, what to do in terms of nutritional education and food sovereignty was the essence of the presentation of the producer Cecilio Gómez Suárez belonging to the Ruta Invasora cooperative, with emphasis on his experience in the cultivation of Chinese beans and how they are consumed.

Also of great interest was the topic on sustainable agriculture presented by producer Isabel Formoso Muñoz through the tree tomato.

The relationship between La Tarea Vida (“Task Life“) and agroecology, as well as the role played by the university of the territory in important agroecological projects such as the potato project, were other topics discussed.

In general, the municipal agroecology event helped to further consolidate the work of this movement. Important agreements were reached at this event that involve the active participation of all economic and governmental actors for the benefit of ecological and sustainable agriculture.
