The current power crisis facing the country, exacerbated by the tightening of the US blockade against Cuba, is affecting all sectors and productive entities on the island. In the municipality of Contramaestre, the family product supplies, and services sector is among the hardest hit.
Regarding the situation of these vital services in recent weeks, Teodoro Espinosa Castro, Director of the Trade and Gastronomy Company in the region, provided an update:
“The company is going through a very complex situation, as it is not exempt from all the economic and electricity problems caused by the United States government’s blockade. The impacts are quite clear and noticeable, since we cannot reach the population to meet all their basic food needs.”
“As for the distribution of the World Food Program, we are currently in the third two-month period, and we still need to complete the distribution of oil and peas. Therefore, we continue working on the distribution policy based on the country’s current resources.”
“In the case of the prioritized sectors, these are determined by the amount of resources available to them. It is not the State’s intention to prevent reaching one hundred percent of the population, as we know that, in general, they are suffering the consequences of the economic blockade. However, based on available resources, priority is given to certain groups.” These represent an urgent need for the entire population, including pregnant women, children (especially young children), people over 65, and those receiving assistance.”
“In order to provide services to the population in some way, we have a production plan that also includes the company’s warehouses and all its centers, based on the productive potential of each locality, thus taking advantage of the different crops.”
In addressing these difficulties, self-management projects, production linkages with new economic actors, and food production based on the actual resources of each entity stand out. In this way, alternative solutions are being sought for the current situation.
