Urban and Family Farming: An Urgent Challenge

Urban and family farming

Urban, suburban, and family farming works in coordination with the Party and the government of the municipality of Contramaestre, including mass organizations and the general public, to increase root crop production based on the productive potential of each area. Due to its importance in the lives of the population, this agricultural production system is a program whose results are closer to its intended recipients, and consequently, it optimizes the processes from the field to the family table.

Food production through urban, suburban, and family farming permeates all aspects of society. It is a matter that is present in our homes daily, and more than once a day. For this reason, it has been a recurring theme in the numerous visits made by Yoendris Oconor Reyes and Manuel Rodríguez Reyes, First Secretary of the Party in the municipality of Contramaestre and President of the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power, respectively.

To strengthen the urban, suburban, and family farming program, the following objectives should be considered: continue working on connecting new areas to achieve 20 square meters per inhabitant dedicated to the production of vegetables and herbs; complete the construction of organoponics in suitable areas where this task has not yet begun; meet vegetable production targets; and improve the application of technology in the different farming methods. Priority should also be given to subprograms that directly impact the production of seeds, organic fertilizers, agroecological pest management, and water use, among other objectives.
