The rains that occurred during the last few days, associated with a tropical depression on the east of the country, were beneficial for the municipality of Contramaestre, as far as the water reserve is concerned. In this santiaguero territory more than 20 millimeters of precipitation were reported in the last 48 hours, according to Orlando Vega Zamora, operator of the Meteorological Station in Contramaestre.
The specialist also commented that the most significant rains in the territory were recorded last Friday 26 September, date coinciding with the beginning of the meteorological phenomenon in the territory, although unevenly distributed in several points of the geography of Contramaestre.
The Carlos Manuel Céspedes reservoir, of vital importance in supplying water to the population and other sectors, benefited with 3 million cubic meters during the last rains, increasing its level up to 68% of its filling capacity. This was explained by Rodolfo González Gutiérrez, Chief of Water Resources in the municipality. This translates into a reserve of 166 million cubic metres of water, with the possibility of rising to a higher level depending on the runoff process.
González Gutiérrez added that currently the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes reservoir provides water pumping services to the province of Granma, in addition to its own provincial head, the latter with approximately 780 liters per second. Cane and rice irrigation systems in the territory and fishing areas also benefit.
According to the expert, in the municipality of Contramaestre, the rains of recent days contribute to a discreet improvement of the water reserve in the main hydraulic complex of the territory. This ensures greater stability in the supply of water to the local population, priority centers and strategic sectors such as agriculture.
