Cuban president complies with intense agenda in Russia

Moscow, May 9 (Prensa Latina) The President of the Republic and First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), Miguel Diaz-Canel, concluded a busy work agenda on the second day of his visit to Russia.

In the first activity in this capital, the president paid tribute to the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, laying a wreath at the monument in his honor in the square named after him in Moscow’s Sokol district.

Before this ceremony, Diaz-Canel held a brief meeting with members of the Cuban state mission in Russia.

After visiting the monument to Fidel Castro, the Cuban head of State was received by the vice president of the Russian Security Council and chairman of the United Russia party, Dmitry Medvedev, who asked him to “convey greetings and best wishes to Army General Raul Castro.”

Medvedev and Diaz-Canel expressed their satisfaction with the results achieved so far between the political organizations and the potentialities of their work for future development.

Later on, and for the first time, the Cuban president participated in person in the expanded meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, organized by Russia on the tenth anniversary of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

In his speech, Diaz-Canel emphasized that he was in Russia at a time when the 64th anniversary of the establishment of relations between Cuba and the Soviet Union was being celebrated.

He also thanked the EAEU member countries for their long-standing support in the struggle of the Cuban people against the cruel economic, commercial, and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba.

“The Cuban government grants great importance to the economic, trade, and financial relations and cooperation with the EEU and its member states, taking as a premise the historical relations that unite us with that group of countries,” Díaz-Canel said at the meeting.

Ending the day, the Cuban president held a meeting with the leader of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, Gennady Zyuganov, where both officials confirmed the excellent relations between the political formations.

This Thursday, May 9, the delegation led by Diaz-Canel participated in the parade in Moscow’s Red Square to commemorate the 79th anniversary of Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War.

Diaz-Canel’s current visit to Russia is his third as a head of State. The first occurred from October 27 to 30, 2019, and the second from November 19 to 22, 2022. In all of them, he held meetings with President Vladimir Putin.
