Contramaestre farmers attentive to crop sanitation conditions

Plant health is the science that deals with the study and promotion of practices that favor healthy crop growth. Preventing diseases, attacks and other harmful agents in the development of different plantations, is the daily challenge of this discipline valued by specialists as key to the sustainable development of agriculture, necessary in the control of pests and plant pathology. Protecting plant health is essential for agricultural progress.

Preserving plants from attacks or other diseases, promoting good health throughout the growth cycle of crops is a priority of this science that farmers take into account to obtain high quality crops.

During 2023, the agricultural sector of the municipality of Contramaestre in Santiago de Cuba took special interest in this aspect. In this sense, visits were made at different times of the year to agricultural structures, inspections that represented 53 percent of the Basic Units of Cooperative Production (UBPC), 100 percent of the Agricultural Production Cooperatives (CPA) and 85 percent of the Credit and Service Cooperatives (CCS).

According to data recently offered in the annual balance of the productive line of the eastern jurisdiction, one of the incidences of plant health in the past year was the lower use of Entomopathogens and Entomophages due to the non-production of biological media in the reproduction centers (CREE), a cause generated by the lack of raw material and electricity.

Difficulties with the phytosanitary coverage of the productive bases is another deficiency in plant health in Santiago. Irregularity that prevents to cover the entire universe of tracking and sending samples that are required for each harmful organism. A deficit that is found mainly in UBPC and CCS.

In terms of the development of technical activities there was a higher figure with respect to 2022, 459 were carried out in the Contramaestrian locality with the attendance of 3500 participants.

To continue studying the soil, water, fauna, climate, orientation and herbaceous species will be the challenge of the specialists of the discipline in the southeastern municipality. Factors to be taken into account when planning the crop.
