Despite the resource limitations imposed by the ruthless blockade maintained and intensified by the United States government against Cuba, the municipality of Contramaestre, in the province of Santiago de Cuba, is making progress in the production of root vegetables, grains, and other vegetables to increase agricultural output and thus improve the food supply for families.
Great efforts are being made to achieve this goal; however, what has been accomplished so far is not enough to achieve the desired results in improving food security. This compels us to intensify our efforts in every productive area, seeking greater production to satisfy the public demand for fresh, high-quality agricultural products during the current spring season.
Cooperatives, farmers, farm and plot managers, and individuals who own arable land authorized by the Cuban State, all committed to improving the people’s nutrition, play a vital role in this endeavor.
To achieve success in this endeavor, it is essential to prepare the land according to its requirements, carefully select seeds for rapid germination, and take advantage of any remaining soil moisture. Only in this way will we be able to achieve high and stable yields.
We are working diligently to reclaim new lands for agricultural use, with various local organizations contributing to the commitment made to the region’s agri-food program.
To succeed in this area, we must improve work controls and organization, systematically reviewing what was and wasn’t done each day. This will allow us to accurately track our progress and identify what remains to be done. This task must be led by the agricultural department in our municipality to ensure we fulfill our commitment to providing more food for the people.
