The Federation of Middle School Students (FEEM) is a student organization that brings together secondary schools in Cuba. Monitors the duties and rights of students at this level, represents them and manages their concerns and needs.
Born on 6 December 1970, as part of the process of strengthening mass organizations in order to revitalize the student movement in secondary education.
It was preceded by the Unión de Estudiantes Secundarios (UES) and the Student Brigades “José Antonio Echeverría” (BEJAE), which provided significant experiences for the formation of the new organization whose main objective would be to channel the social concerns of students.
On 9 December it appeared in the newspaper Juventud Rebelde (organ of the Union of Young Communists) The UJC declaration, which announced the constitution of the FEEM and called on students to organize the new federation in all the country’s middle-level educational establishments.
The new group would include the student associations set up in Basic Secondary and Upper Secondary Education (pre-university, technological and other establishments included at this level).
Although the Federation of Middle School Students had its own autonomy, its work was guided by UJC. This work was carried out by the educators of the youth political organization at each level. At the campuses, relations with the UJC Base Committees should be distinguished by cooperation and coordination of activities and tasks.
The creation of FEEM represented a step forward in the organizational development of the student movement and its unity with UJC. In this way the Cuban youth association system was formed, which had a great impact on the socialization of the new generations.
