A date to send love back

A date to send love back

It is said of maternal love that it is compassionate, pampering, hope-giving. It is also spoken of as a special instinct that anticipates danger and protects despite one’s own pain. This is how mothers have earned their place among the most affectionate beings on earth; when referring to them, the word “sacrifice” always comes to mind.

Indispensable is their guidance in the first steps, their arms that extend to give comfort, their friendly hand that corrects and teaches. Through their mothers we learned the value of a “thank you” and a “please”; they spoke to us of constancy and respect for those around us.

Each one carries in her eyes the sleepless nights; in her feet, the rush of a hectic life. But they also carry a smile, a reflection of peace. There is virtue in their hands and poise in their gait.

In Cuba, the second Sunday of May was chosen to recognize the role of “mom” in family dynamics. This day of homage has already become a tradition, which includes gifts and congratulations.

In truth, 24 hours are not enough to reward a lifetime of self-sacrifice, but they do at least allow us to express gratitude to the one who offers tenderness. Celebrating Mom is like celebrating life. Her work is worthy of the recognition of the whole family.

Today’s mothers face all the challenges of everyday life, but they draw from the examples of the past, from women who made history by the strength of their character. Their imprint is added to this annual celebration, and allows us to be proud of the Cuban mothers of yesterday and always.

As we wait for this day, Cuba embraces and honors them, for they have more than earned that date in May that we have chosen to return love to them.
