“I am in charge of a self-consumption area in the Basic Unit of Cooperative Production (UBPC) Romana Siete which is dedicated, mainly to food production. Our business is to produce. We have planted several crops: sweet potato, okra, melon, cowpea, guava and coconut. We plan to continue increasing our planting”.
She is Yanelis Guerra Perez, who has lived in the community of Romana Siete since she was 10 years old. When she turned seventeen, she started working and showed her vocation for making the land produce, which led her to graduate as an agronomy engineer. She currently devotes much of her time to this work and is proud of it:
“It is not doing a job, it is that you like it, it is to fulfill , it is to know what I am going to plant, to have purposes, projects to improve for the community, for the UBPC, to have income, that the productions have good yields”.
But Yanelis’ life is not only limited to work in the fields, she is also a member of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) since she was fourteen years old, in addition to doing her housework at the head of her family.
“How do you link farm work with housework and the activities of the federation? ”
“ It is a bit complex but not impossible . The biggest burden in a house goes to the woman because we have to divide ourselves and do several functions, cooking, washing, but there are always people around us who collaborate and the work becomes easier for us. I was a platoon leader and at that time I arrived at night and my husband had already cooked, sometimes I had to wash at midnight, but I fulfilled the task. I also fulfilled the tasks of the federation by going to activities and meetings. I have never stopped attending and I am proud of that.”
She is Yanelis Guerra , an empowered woman, who is part of the more than 4 million Cuban federates who comply with the tasks of the organization and who receive the guarantees of their rights, she is part of the more than 83 thousand women belonging to the cooperative sector who contribute to boost food production. About them; expressed Maité Villa Ortega, general secretary of the FMC here , in the municipal act for the 64th anniversary of constituted the organization.
“Wherever there is a woman, whether in the community, in a work area, in a recreation center, there is the federation. We work for all women, whether they are members of the federation or not. When we talk about the role of the organization in the defense of women, we include all of them. On the sixty-fourth anniversary of the Federation of Cuban Women, receive our warm congratulations and our gratitude for your active performance in the fulfillment of the tasks of the Federation of Cuban Women. We wish you many congratulations and urge you to continue being faithful followers of Vilma’s legacy and eternal defenders of the Cuban Revolution, socialism and the victories achieved.
