How to confront media manipulation? What are the potentialities of the Cuban press to exercise its role as a reliable communicator in the face of the fourth generation war? These and other questions were the subject of the Eleventh UPEC Congress Assembly in the Santiago municipality of Contramaestre, a space for debate and consensus in which press professionals were projected to continue encouraging innovation and relations with the system of local public institutions.
The profession of journalist faces enormous challenges, challenges that can only be overcome with skill, talent and rules that favor their work in an environment where there is not always clear access to sources.
The press workers in the municipality of Contramaestre discussed these issues in their balance assembly, which covered the period 2018-2022, in view of the congress of this guild to be held next year.
The meeting was held in the presence of the member of the Municipal Bureau of the party Yimisleidis Rosales Fernández, the President of the Union of Journalists of Cuba Ricardo Ronquillo Bello and Lourdes Palau Vázquez, Provincial President of UPEC.
It is a challenge to make journalism more current and committed, to dismantle the narrative of the enemies of the revolution.
Cuban press defending its fatherland
The work of the press must be tempered to one of the most complex moments of the nation, under a fierce media war and the attempt to apply a soft coup.
In view of the imminent approval of a Communication Law in Cuba, an old demand of the guild, the journalists in Contramaestre proposed members of the organization at all levels, jurors and delegates to the UPEC congress.
They also planned a program of activities to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of their organization next year and to celebrate the eleventh Congress of the Association of Cuban Journalists (Upec).
