Contramaestre on May Day

Contramaestre celebrates this May Day with the conviction that “the Homeland must be defended.” In this eastern region of Cuba, the traditional parade brings together all the working people.

From the early hours of the morning, the municipality’s workers gather in the city’s streets and avenues, with the enthusiasm characteristic of the grand celebration that is International Workers’ Day.

Red, blue, and white are the predominant colors in the streets this May Day, an allegory to the Cuban flag and what these colors represent for every Cuban.

More than 14,000 workers, organized into 15 unions, constitute the main labor force in the region, guaranteeing production and services in vital sectors such as health, education, agriculture, and others. This May Day, their important role in society is recognized.
