Cuba to graduate more than 12,000 new medical science professionals this year

The training of integral professionals who will promote the country’s development at its highest level, with a high humanistic sense, is an essential premise in Cuba’s Medical Sciences centers, where more than 12,000 new professionals in the field will graduate this year.

The figure was announced in Ciego de Avila by Dr. Fidela Reyes Obediente, general director of Undergraduate Studies of the General Directorate of Teaching at the Ministry of Public Health (Minsap), during the graduation ceremony of students of Medicine and related areas at the José Assef Yara University.

He explained that the current calendar will have the peculiarity, and the challenge, of having started one course on January 15 -it will end in November of this year- and in September will start the other, unprecedented in the national education system, for which a readjustment has been necessary, without losing quality.

Reyes Obediente said that the new doctors have the possibility of opting for the vertical internship in the fifth year, and in the sixth year they can obtain the specialty directly. He announced that the country has a plan to increase the number of vacancies in 69 specialties, especially the basic ones: internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecobstetrics and intensive care.
