Infertility Program, 10 years of vitality in Contramaestre

In Contramaestre, a municipality in eastern Cuba, the Infertility Program has been operating for 10 years, with a municipal clinic staffed by a coordinator, a nurse, a psychologist, an obstetrician and a laboratory technician. It is located on the second floor of the Rehabilitation Room of the Polyclinic America 1.

The Program Coordinator, Dr. Odelvis Lora Sánchez, agreed to answer our questions.

Journalist: How does the Consultation work and what results have been obtained in 2023?

Odelvis Lora: Consultations are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the other days are very productive. The three health areas of the territory are attended here…. this year we have attended 39 new cases, couples who wish to have children…. a thorough study is made…. they are referred to the secondary and tertiary level…. the study is concluded and the patient becomes pregnant.

Q: At Contramaestre we have achieved pregnancies and births this year as a result of the attention they have received.

O.L: Yes, this year we have achieved nine pregnancies, in the America 1 Area, three pregnancies, Baire has achieved four and America 2, two. In the Baire health area last week a healthy baby girl was born and her family is very happy and grateful.

Q: Are there any limitations to attending infertility consultations?

O.L: The main limitation is age, after 45 years of age it is very risky… the couple must have spent a year without using contraceptive methods, if they have not become pregnant then they can come to our consultation.

Q: What appeal would you make to couples who have not been able to have children?

O.L: All couples who have not been able to have children, in any health area of the municipality, and who are of the age allowed to receive treatment can come to the clinic, here we are prepared to serve them with much love so that they can achieve what they desire.
