Rolando Ayub Elías

Rolando Ayub Elias

Born in the town of Maffo, in the municipality of Contramaestre, in the province of Santiago de Cuba. He was born on April 18, 1937.

He began his revolutionary activities at a very early age. When he learned of the presence of the Rebel Army in the vicinity of Contramaestre, he marched to the mountains with a relative, but was sent back to the city because he had no weapons.

Later, together with two companions, he disarmed three military men of the dictatorship and joined the forces of the Tercer Freente Oriental Mario Muñoz Monroy under the orders of Commander Juan Almeida Bosque. He participates in war actions in the areas of La Anita, Dos Palmas, El Cobre and in sabotage along the Carretera Central.

The morning of November 13, 1958 passed with suspicious tranquility in the town of Maffo, at times, the atmosphere of the neighborhood was altered by the presence of the official military patrols, which tried to prevent the actions of the clandestine 26th of July movement and the Rebel Army.

Around 9:00 a.m., six fighters of the Rebel Army burst into Maffo Park, firing shots in the air and shouting for Commander in Chief Fidel Castro. The military of the tyranny were paralyzed and surprised by the suicidal action and could not respond to the shots. The six young rebels had the mission to confront a patrol of the tyranny that traditionally supplied drinking water in a spring on the outskirts of the village. When the soldiers did not show up, the members of the Rebel Army decided to leave a record of their presence in the area. Among them, Rolando Ayub Elías, only 21 years old, was entering the land where he was born and where he was waiting for his best efforts to be free for good.

After the quick action, the rebels bought cigarettes at Américo Rodríguez’s store and began their retreat. Rolando, whom everyone in Maffo knew as “El Morito”, decided to buy some candies for his comrades and returned to the village accompanied by his companions José Luis García and Leonardo Galán.

A confidant of the Army of the tyranny immediately alerted the government troops about the return of the 3 rebels. In the place known as Blanquizal, only 1 km from Maffo, the combatants were ambushed and Rolando was immediately killed with a bullet in the forehead.
