Seeds, an essential key to the quality of food production

Seeds of all species have been widely recognized as the key and fundamental input to increase agricultural productivity and thus achieve food security for a growing world population.

In Cuba, the agricultural sector is working to guarantee quality seeds in order to achieve high yield productions, especially in the different campaigns that take place during the year.

To this end, the producers of the southeastern territory of Contramaestre, through empirical knowledge, individual experience or studies related to the subject, harvest and store seeds that will later be used in their harvests.

This aspect still needs to be intentionally improved in the agricultural structures with emphasis on the production cycles, likewise, the lack of timely information to the companies about the variety of seeds they have, the absence of technicians to attend this discipline, violations of legal regulations, among other issues, currently affect this vital issue for the food security and sovereignty to which the country is summoned.

Elements that have been discussed in different spaces by farmers and academics of the territory in various agricultural meetings. In this regard, it is stated that the practice of sustainable agriculture, based on obtaining benefits through the rational use of natural resources and the implementation of new technologies, the seed will allow a better application of inputs and may be the answer to food shortages.

Paying attention to sowing, harvesting, conditioning, drying, analysis and quality control, classification and selection, washing and treatment, storage and certification of seeds will be essential keys to the yield and quality of production.
