María Amelia, one of the vanguards of the Federation of Cuban Women

a vanguard in the Federation of Cuban Women

When the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) was founded on August 23, 1960, María Amelia was still a child, not old enough to join the ranks of the organization. However, her mother, who was involved in those activities, inculcated in her the interest of always being aware of the needs, problems and interests of women.

Thus, she grew up and learned more about the organization, which had already brought together many women of the Federation, who, thanks to the dynamism of the FMC, had the opportunity to improve themselves and participate in the construction of society in any position, facing prejudices and taboos as remnants of a past that had already been left behind.

And in this task, María Amelia demanded more of herself, and as a young woman, she finally followed in her mother’s footsteps. At the age of 14, she joined the ranks of the organization as a member of the Federation, and very soon her qualities for leadership were recognized. Since then, it is impossible to talk about the history of the FMC in Contramaestre without mentioning María Amelia Núñez.

“I am a fulfilled woman, I am very happy to be federated. I am satisfied. For the results of my work I have achieved the 23rd of August distinction. I was privileged to receive the Ana Betancourt distinction, an incentive that has been very useful to me because these are things that one has achieved, thanks to being a member of the Federation of Cuban Women. We are preparing for the Eleventh Congress by fulfilling all the tasks assigned to us. To say that have a lot of confidence in us because we will never let down our Revolution, our Commander in Chief, our Vilma Espín, who created the organization and fought so hard for it.”

“I am secretary of the Luz Bertha Sanchez delegation belonging to Block 11 of which I am also the organizer. We are aware of everything in favor of women, we meet with the required systematicity, we commemorate anniversaries, conferences, we carry out activities, we have a group of creative women, always led by us. Most of the women participate in all the activities. We are also attentive to the elderly, what care they need, how they are cared for, how they are cared for at home. We try to actively incorporate the younger ones into the organization. We cooperate with the activities of the children’s circle. We keep an eye on whether there is a sick woman, whether she went to the doctor, whether she received the required care, whether she needs company, whether she is complying with the treatment, we keep an eye on the family doctor so that they all have a cytological test, that is, we are always aware of everything that happens in the community”.

“Cuban women have a motto that we will carry forward for our Eleventh Congress and in all the activities in which women are present, and it is that “Cuban women are winners of the impossible”.
