Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero today recalled the unfinished letter written by José Martí 128 years ago, in which he warned about the intentions of the United States to take over the island.

The head of government stressed on Twitter that the missive addressed to the Mexican Manuel Mercado is still valid “when we live in such a complex scenario, suffocated by the intensified blockade”.

In the text, considered his political testament, Martí warned about the expansionist appetites of the United States and the existence of an annexationist current in the island’s society alien to the libertarian clamor.

The National Hero expressed his willingness to die to achieve that freedom that would also support the sovereignty of other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

To prevent Cuba from opening, by the annexation of the imperialists there and the Spaniards, the road that has to be blinded, “and with our blood we are blinding, of the annexation of the peoples of our America, to the revolted and brutal North that despises them”, he wrote.
