Pharmacists: responding to global health needs

Every September 25, coinciding with the anniversary of the founding of the International Pharmaceutical Federation, World Pharmacists’ Day is celebrated.

This year’s theme is “Pharmacists responding to global health needs, providing local solutions”, as a reminder that the profession as a whole contributes to improving the health and well-being of the world.

On this occasion, the men and women belonging to the international profession insist on responding to major health and social challenges affecting the health of the population.

Among these challenges are the problems of drug supply, the shortage of health professionals, the aging of the population, unwanted loneliness, growing mental health problems or public health risks and new epidemics.

Pharmacists must seek solutions to respond to the health needs of systems and patients, with contributions in hospitals and health centers, in the pharmaceutical industry and distribution, clinical analysis, research and teaching, and community pharmacy.

Today, pharmacists around the world are working to improve the health and well-being of citizens, such as vaccinating children in South Africa, supporting diabetic patients in Lebanon and educating about the responsible and sustainable use of medicines in the Netherlands.

Pharmacists around the world make a difference in our communities every day, showing pride in results and championing the value of the profession and its potential to meet the health needs of the entire planet.

The International Pharmaceutical Federation continues to work to improve global health in collaboration with the World Health Organization, offering technical expertise and executing joint projects, as well as contributing to action plans that seek advances in pharmacological science, education and practice.
