Correct diagnoses, safe patients

World Patient Savety Day

Correct diagnoses, safe patients”, is the slogan of the 2024 campaign on the occasion of World Patient Safety Day, a campaign that does not exclude us, since in Cuba the patient is a priority of the nation’s Public Health system.

Patient safety, as its name indicates, is a discipline that provides for health care, which arose due to the evolution of health care systems and the increase in the number of injuries to people treated in health centers.

Ensuring a healthy life and promoting the well-being of all and all ages, is its priority essence, in order to ensure the access of individuals to health services, with emphasis on drugs and vaccines.

Patient safety is an important quality in the quality of service offered by hospitals and health care centers, in a timely, equitable and efficient manner.

However, the protocol is very much taken into account in the Island’s health system, which is currently subject to a complex economic scenario and a recrudescent blockade, and sometimes it does not escape from errors due to the lack of a culture of patient safety.

This results in a lack of sensitivity, of love for others, of giving a true value to a man as similar as the personnel committed to his quality of life.

Sometimes we witness incorrect or late diagnoses, infections contracted in hospitals, non-compliance with medication in hospital wards, lack of communication between health personnel, patient or companion, harmful medication, in short, a string of deficiencies that damage or endanger the patient’s health.

It is also worth mentioning the preventable deaths related to childbirth and pre-natal care, considering that women and newborns are exposed to risks and harm as a result of unsafe care provided by health care services.

Therefore, making this day a call to awareness in defense of patient safety should be a basic premise for the careful care of sick people, whether hospitalized or through medical consultations.

The Cuban medical staff is called upon to invest knowledge, dedication, humanism, sensitivity and respect for the patient in need in order to save lives without causing harm. Although it has gained international prestige, it is not exempt from suggestions, because identification with this profession is an honor that exalts those who are part of this army of white coats at the service of the people.
