The People’s Council of Maffo, located in the municipality of Contramaestre, has facts and patriots who attest to their contribution to the struggles for Cuban independence in different stages of history.
In this sense, one of the figures most remembered by the local population is Diosmedes Silveira Valdés, a young patriot who participated in the clandestine struggles against the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista.
Diomedes joined in 1958 the Second Eastern Front Frank País, under the leadership of Raúl Castro. In this stage of his revolutionary work, he participated in the combat of Central Soledad, in Guantánamo. In this military action, the 25-year-old revolutionary was hit by multiple enemy shots that caused his immediate death on April 14 of that same year.
The youth has always been a protagonist in the efforts to achieve the independence of Cuba, both in the armed struggle and in the defense of ideas. Diosmedes was one of the many Cubans who, regardless of their young age, gave themselves fully to the struggle for the welfare and sovereignty of their nation; he was a hero of Contramaestre and of all Cuba.
