The farming sector’s main mission in the southeastern territory was to produce food in an efficient manner and to meet the demand of the population of Contramaestre.
Among other objectives, in 2024 the productive sector of Contramaestre worked to achieve an adequate integration among all the economic actors that would facilitate the strengthening of the local agri-food systems, and to lower the prices of agricultural products that today have high costs.
During the year that ended, miscellaneous crops were one of the productions that remained affordable in the municipality’s agricultural markets throughout the year. Another of the objectives of the agricultural sector of the town of Santiago was the substitution of imports in important productions that have a strong weight in the economy and food. An example of this is corn, a grain that presented a favorable competition in the stage that is coming to an end.
Contramaestre has recently been working to achieve an agri-food system that is self-sufficient in the locality. So that products of the basic food basket can be harvested, many of them obtained in the international market at high prices. In this sense, the Santiago jurisdiction carries out, among other programs, the rice program. This is supported by the grain agricultural extension movement. During the present period, this system achieved favorable results and also incorporated young producers to the program, mainly with women collaborating in the socialization and training of the producers who are interested in planting rice.
Despite the limited resources, the counter-Maestrian production line worked in 2024 and obtained discrete results. Among other factors, this is due to the lack of fuel, which affects, for example, the preparation of land in time for the differences in the land. This is an area that must limit planting levels, increase yields and respond to the demand of the coming seasons. Another issue is the acquisition of chemical products necessary for the prevention of pests and diseases.
Nevertheless, thanks to science and innovation, agroecology, the support of specialized centers and teachers, and government management, it was possible for the territory to achieve favorable results in some production areas that are essential for the fulfillment of the Food Sovereignty Plan.
During the stage that concludes, agriculture in Contramaestre allocated a number of resources to the areas of agricultural development (productive poles) with the objective of guaranteeing indispensable productions in the commercialization and demand of the population.
In the Bungo productive pole, an area that responds to local self-sufficiency, there are cultivated and in production extensions of land with crops such as cassava, plantain, sweet potato and beans. By 2025, other strategies will be implemented in this production center to achieve a sustained increase in food production.
The need to sow and produce more is fundamental for the agricultural sector in Contramautla. Continuing to support the incorporation of all organizations, companies and cooperatives with potential, as well as guaranteeing better attention to agricultural workers are premises for the sector in 2025.
