Contramaestre Grain Drying and Processing Plant is getting ready for corn harvesting

Agroecological practices favor peanut farming in Contramaestre.

About 10 thousand tons of corn are expected to be harvested by the Grain Drying and Processing Plant of the municipality of Contramaestre for the current campaign.

This campaign is expected to begin in the southeastern territory in August. This industry receives productions from all the municipalities of the province of Santiago de Cuba and provides its services to other territories in the eastern part of the country. The factory is currently in the process of repair, maintenance and preparation of technological equipment.

Preparations are aimed at initiating a corn harvest that meets the demand of the population and the island’s economy. These results will have an impact on the substitution of imports of this basic foodstuff for animal and human consumption.

In this regard, José Antonio Camejo Plutín, director of the industry, said that the industry has been preparing with the repair issue, reviewing all the means involved in the campaign, the means of calibration, weighing equipment and laboratories where the moisture of the grain is measured. Fundamentally, the drying tower plays an essential role, since in about four hours between 52 and 60 tons of corn can be dried.

According to factory managers, the factory can process 120 tons per day at its maximum capacity. Camejo Plutín also argued that the corn drying process, which in previous years has had repercussions in receiving volumes of grain, is of great help to the farmer because it shortens the period between one harvest and another, because it reduces the time of preparation and allows to cultivate on time in the different campaigns.
