Cultural diversity is palpable in diverse manifestations: religious beliefs, music, language, art, work and in all human activity. Because in everything we do, people reflect our culture as a community, society or nation.
And these particular characteristics are not only beautiful, but also enrich our spiritual, moral, affective and intellectual life. They also contribute to poverty reduction and are the necessary force to achieve social and economic development.
This diversity, which is accompanied by innovation, creativity and acceptance, allows us to grow in all aspects. The opposite generates conflicts that threaten our well-being and our dignity as human beings.
Hence, the importance of cultural diversity and the way in which it manifests itself, considering it as fundamental to the human race, as necessary as biological diversity for living organisms.
To respect others and their culture is to respect human rights and freedoms. We all have the possibility to express ourselves, to create or defend works in our language, and to participate in the culture we have or choose.
It was this precept that gave rise to the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, with the aim of supporting diversity, dialogue, inclusion and cooperation among different cultures.
This day is an opportunity to celebrate the enormous benefits of cultural diversity, including the rich intangible heritage of humanity, and to reaffirm our commitment to building a more peaceful world based on the values of mutual understanding and intercultural dialogue.
Culture, as the engine of change and development, is the lifeblood of our societies and we must help them thrive now more than ever. With so many crises around the world, from climate change to conflict to Covid-19, people need moments to connect, come together, understand each other and imagine a better future.
Music, art, literature, film, dance and many other forms of cultural expression and creativity propel us to overcome the challenges we face.
Developing cultural pluralism should be everyone’s concern in order to enrich society and have a harmonious and respectful coexistence of different human groups. Because in such a diverse world, the destruction of culture is a crime and uniformity is a dead end.
