Niceto Pérez García, 78 years after his assassination

Niceto Pérez

On May 17, 1946 in the realengo ¨ El Vínculo ¨ located in the eastern province of Guantánamo, took place one of the events that marked the history of Cuban farmers, the assassination of the peasant leader Niceto Pérez García.

This event, instead of intimidating and subduing, caused indignation and rejection in the peasant sector of the time. After what happened, the city of Guantánamo received the workers of the countryside and the city with a protest of rejection and pain for what happened. This event made him become a representative figure of the Cuban peasantry.

Niceto Perez died for defending his right to the land, the interest of the landowner Lino Mancebo Rosell, administrator of the company Agricola e Industrial Maca S.A. in the area of La Maya to occupy plots in the area of Realengo led to the death of Niceto Perez. This situation was recurrent before 1959 and was suffered by several producers.

This panorama was transformed after May 17, 1959 when the first Agrarian Reform Law was signed, crossing the path of the Revolution, especially for the men and women of the countryside.
