Food production in Contramaestre must be reconsidered from the bottom up

Salvador Valdés Mesa, Vice President of the Republic of Cuba, toured agricultural areas in Contramaestre, in order to check the progress in food production in this municipality of Santiago de Cuba province.

On this occasion, the also member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), accompanied by the highest authorities of the territory and the first Secretary of the PCC in the province José Ramón Monteagudo Ruiz, went to the farms of the productive poles El Rincón and Bungo.

In both a common denominator: work is being done, but are the results up to the food demands? Are harvests with high yields achieved? Do the crops have a correct Agrotechnics? The answer is also common: No.

Food production needs a boost

Valdés Mesa saluted the efforts of men and women who are linked to these poles, but called attention to the urgent need to take better care of the plantations, plant crops resistant to climate change and better stimulate those who work.

We must look at agriculture differently, because all the effort made in food production by farmers will be worthless if we do not invest in the field, improving infrastructure, machinery, putting in the hands of those who produce the minimum necessary resources, from a file to the containers and finally sufficient payment and on time.

It is also necessary to follow the example of the highest authorities of the country and the province: to put the feet on the ground, which is to visit the producer, to know their realities, to attend them, to check and follow up their work.

In the meantime, there will be those who stand out more than others, those who have a stroke of luck and achieve a great harvest, but they will not obtain the productive jolt that the countryside of the province needs right now.
