Science and Technology FORUM favors solution to deaf people’s problems

Contramaestre University Branch held its Technology and SCience event focusing on the needs of deaf people

The Contramaestre University Center held the Science and Technology FORUM event, where 24 papers, selected from the pre-events of the different courses, were set forth. Teaching and non-teaching workers, as well as students presented their papers in front of the auditorium and two boards of examiners.

One of the works presented, entitled ¨Timbre lumínico para las personas sordas¨ (Light doorbell for deaf people), was defended by one of its authors, Luis Ángel Aguilar Carrazana, president of ANSOC in this municipality, who presented an invention to solve a problem of deaf people who live alone and who, due to their disability, cannot hear the knock on the door when someone comes to their house.

Traditionally these people rely on a dog to alert them to the arrival of a visitor, in other cases, the person who arrives throws a small object out the window, to draw attention and make their presence known. But this is not always possible, especially when the deaf person lives in high places.

Life improvement for deaf people in Contramaestre

It is a luminous bell, not a sound bell as hearing people have, it is luminous that instead of emitting sounds at the door, through the lighting, they know that they are calling them. Several resources were used to make this work of FORUM: bulb and LED lamp tubes melted, scraps of wires, a push button, which we call pulse switch. From these bulbs and lamps we extracted some internal resources that we have been able to recover to make this luminous bell, with which we have been able to substitute imports of this resource.

This invention, which also has the authorship of Doctor of Science María Eulalia Martín Rivero, has been put into practice in eight homes, seven in this municipality and one in Santiago de Cuba, and has had a great impact among people of the deaf community, for the benefits it brings.

They request that light be placed in the kitchen, in the bedroom, in the living room, near the television set; so that if they are watching television and the person who arrives presses the push button, it emits a continuous light. This has resulted in them interacting more with their neighbors.
