Violeta Casal

Violeta Casal: Born in the city of Matanzas in the 1920s, she died in Havana City on October 28, 1992.

She is the symbol of the female broadcaster in Cuba. She graduated as Doctor in Philosophy and Letters, and in Pedagogy at the University of Havana. She also completed studies at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Havana.

In the early 1950’s, Violeta Casal was considered one of the three best artists of the Cuban Theater.
In August 1958, persecuted for her revolutionary activities, she left the stage to star in the greatest and most brilliant story from the insurrectionary mountains, where the struggle for the full freedom and sovereignty of the homeland was being fought.

She went up to the Sierra Maestra, after participating in the April 9 Strike and suffering detention and persecution in Havana. At first she thought of working as a teacher in the Sierra, but Commander in Chief Fidel Castro told her that her mission was to work as a radio announcer for Radio Rebelde.

Thus, together with Ricardo Martinez, Orestes Valera, Guillermo Perez and Jorge Enrique Mendoza, she raised her voice in the Sierra teacher announcing freedom: Here Radio Rebelde, from the free territory of Cuba!
