Working on teaching of local history in Foreman’s educational institutions

History teaching in Contramaestre

Knowledge of local history is a fundamental aspect in the training of children, adolescents and young people at different educational levels. In this sense, the approach to historical figures and facts from the classroom is the most successful strategy.

In the municipality of Contramaestre, which is the protagonist of several historical events in the nation, this task is carried out taking into account the curriculum of the history subject. In this respect, José Mariano Lora López, director of the commission of the discipline of History in the municipality, commented:

“It is important that in addition to the study programmes, which have a national character, the history of the locality, where we live and where the educational institution is situated, should be conveyed to the students. Several outstanding facts must be remembered, such as the historic cry of Baire in the struggles against Spanish rule, or the battle of Maffo just before the revolutionary triumph”.

Visits to museums, tables and moments, assured the director, join efforts to deepen the historicity of Contramaestre and its surroundings. Similarly, the recognition of old buildings, streets and demarcations contributes to a better understanding of current life in the municipality.

Lora López also highlighted the passage of heroes and martyrs of the nation through the territory, as well as the existence of historical sites of great interest, among which stands the Remanganagua Cemetery, first burial site of the National Apostle, José Martí.

In Contramaestre, teaching local history, linked to events of a national character, occupies a prominent place in the various educational establishments, where efforts are made to bring students closer to the most significant events in the territory.
