Contramaestre looking to apply more science to agriculture

Today we have the opportunity to talk with Nordelis Leyva Suárez, training coordinator of the agriculture branch school in the municipality of Contramaestre in the southeast of Cuba.

What is the function or objective of training in this crucial sector in Contramaestre?

“The objective of the training coordinators of agriculture who belong to the branch school of agriculture is to advise methodologically for the good fulfillment of the training plan that all the companies of the agricultural sector in the municipality draw up and once this plan is drawn up, we advise them so that this plan is fulfilled”.

What is coordinated in the agriculture sector?

“We coordinate seminars, courses, workshops, conferences, and all actions aimed at strengthening the capabilities of workers in the agricultural sector”.

What contributions do these workshops, seminars and courses provide to the agricultural personnel in the different branches that this sector has in Contramaestre?

“All the participants in these events acquire knowledge, are updated on the new policies that are coming out for the proper functioning of the system and we now have the possibility of accrediting post-graduate courses”.

Does Contramaestre have a large number of agronomists, technicians and skilled workers?

“Yes, of course. In each company there is a good potential of agronomists, graduates in the different branches that have to do with the agricultural system, technicians and now new specialists are being trained”.

In the municipality of Contramaestre we have by reference that the specialty: Local agricultural innovation system is being carried out, something extremely important for our territory, taking into account that we are eminently agricultural.

What does this specialty consist of?

“This specialty, as you rightly say, is called Local Agricultural Innovation System and, as its name indicates, it is a specialty to strengthen local food systems and contribute to the strengthening of municipal self-sufficiency”.

Who attends?

“There is an enrollment of 25 students from the municipalities of Palma Soriano, San Luis and Contramaestre; the training coordinators of those municipalities that I mentioned before. The rest of the attendees are specialists from the three companies in the territory. There are specialists from INIVIT, CITMA, the delegation of agriculture and a specialist from the Grain Research Institute of the province of Granma, who is also a member”.

Contramaestre has the privilege of having several research centers. Is this a decisive link to produce more?

“It is very gratifying for us to have this group of specialists because they are the people who are in charge of updating everything new that is happening in agriculture and thus we can undoubtedly produce more. This helps us to introduce new technologies, new varieties, clones that we did not have before, they are the people who are in charge of doing the relevant research and analyzing which ones we can introduce in the municipality, always achieving the objectives of producing more for the people”.
