In Contramaestre, a municipality in eastern Cuba, heavily hit by Hurricane Melissa early on October 29, medical institutions did not escape the damage caused by the hydrometeorological event.
Although the health authorities took measures to protect resources and minimize casualties following the guidance issued by the National Council for Civil Defence prior to the cyclone, the sector in the three health areas of Contramaestre suffered damage in several care units.
Information corroborated at the municipal Civil Defence Command Post attests to the devastation suffered by the Orlando Pantoja Tamayo General Teaching Hospital, mainly in the upper floors of the institution as regards false ceilings and blinds, while the Hogar Maternal Clodomira Acosta Ferrales also, although to a lesser extent received the blows of Melissa.
The passage of the hurricane by Contramaestre also left impacts on other units in the health sector where they include the Policlínico de Baire, the cover of the generator set of the Policlínico América 1, as well as the Medical Points of Laguna Blanca and Los Negros, intricate areas of the territory.
Thirteen Doctor’s and Family Nurse’s Offices distributed throughout the Contramaestre region suffered structural damage, in addition to the damage suffered by the Public Health sector in Contramaestre following the scourge of Hurricane Melissa.
