In Contramaestre history is a living heritage and in the effort to maintain the legacy of previous generations, remembering the heroes and martyrs of emancipatory struggles is a priority. This territory is proud to preserve the place where lived until his last days Juan Fajardo Vega, the last mambí.
The memory of Juan Fajardo Vega, the last mambí, is preserved with zeal in Contramaestre and in each anniversary of birth or death, the inhabitants of the locality come to the place where he lived his last days.
Very close to the place of residence is located the primary school Leonor Perez where their descendants, leaders and neighbors often gather to remember, by the hand of the historian the protagonist of the outstanding revolutionary fighter, from its incorporation into the war necessary in July 1895 to its participation in the actions of the rebel army.
It is common to hear anecdotes about the humble and committed character of John, who at no time boasted of his greatness. He refused to collect the pension for his participation in the war, considering that he had not gone there for material gain but for the freedom of Cuba.
Since this 2025 his old dwelling displays an inscription in which, for the greater pride of his fellow citizens, is identified the site where he gave the last sigh the mambí buried in El Cacahual, place where the remains of Lieutenant General Antonio Maceo and his assistant Captain Francisco Gómez Toro rest.
