Combining specialized medical care with fun and recreation is the vision and main objective of the Halo of Hope project, which serves pediatric patients with special abilities and chronic non-communicable diseases. Halo de Esperanza, as its name indicates, is responsible for bringing joy to these little ones in the municipality of Contramaestre.
Nelvis Gorina Sánchez, specialist in Pathological Anatomy, has been leading the project since its inception, and has accumulated many experiences of both joy and gratitude.
Journalist: What is the origin of this initiative for pediatric patients?
Nelvis Gorina Sánchez (N.G.S): Halo de Esperanza is inspired by the project Cruzada por la Alegría, which has a similar social object in the provincial capital. We have gone through several stages, until reaching the current phase and name. Currently we work with children who have special abilities or chronic non-communicable diseases, including oncopediatric. We are a project belonging to the Federation of University Students (FEU) in the municipality, and we accompany students from the Medical Sciences Branch.
What activities have you done in the last few months?
N.G.S: We have carried out various activities within the municipality, such as visits to children in special schools and children’s circles. We have organized theatrical performances for the children of the project, especially with the clown doctors, with games and distractions for the little ones.
What does it mean to be a doctor-clown?
N.G.S: First of all, a clown doctor must know clearly the concept of sensitivity, in order to properly treat children with these pathologies, as well as their relatives. These children, despite their visual, motor or auditory limitations, have the rest of their abilities; yet they need understanding and support, so being sensitive is a determining factor”.
The welfare of children will always be a top priority. In their smiles lies the best gratitude for any effort on their behalf. At Contramaestre, the Halo of Hope project is one of many examples of dedication to the lives of children who most need a moment of joy.
