Born in 1930, in Santiago de Cuba, Vilma Espín Guillois was an example and inspiration for the Cubans , especially for women. Remembered as the heroine of the Revolution in the mountains and plains, she dedicated her life to serving the country.
From his university years, he was involved in the actions of youth against the coup d’état perpetrated by Fulgencio Batista in 1952. In 1956 Vilma joined the 26 de Julio movement, in which he carried out extensive revolutionary work together with Frank País García. Their role in the underground cities was decisive for the organization of the movement.
Under the direction of Frank País, he took up arms in the uprising of 30 November of that same year in Santiago de Cuba, which was intended to support the landing of the expeditions of the Granma yacht. Subsequently assumed responsibility for supplying food and ammunition to the guerrilla fronts. In the last months of the revolutionary campaign, he joined the armed struggle in the mountains of the Sierra Maestra as part of the Second Eastern Front.
From 1959 a new stage began in Cuba, marked by the triumph of the Revolution. In it, Vilma served as a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, and from there she promoted the struggle of Cuban women for their empowerment in all spheres of social life. She played a leading role in the creation of the Federation of Cuban Women, FMC, an organization that continues to promote equality for women.
Vilma Espín, in both clandestine and armed struggle, was noted for his courage and dedication. When talking about Cuban women committed to the good of their nation, their name will always be among the first. Every June 18, the anniversary of his death, Cuba continues to remember its eternal heroine.
