Blood and its derivatives are required in several medical procedures, either in surgeries or treatments against certain diseases. In this sense, blood donations play a fundamental role, since they guarantee patients’ access to an essential resource for their health.
Every June 14, the Volunteer Blood Donor Day is celebrated all over the world to recognize all those who extend their arm for the benefit of those in need.
In Cuba, donations are promoted mainly through the joint work of the National Blood Program and the Revolutionary Defense Committees.
In the municipality of Contramaestre, several men and women join the task of contributing to the physical well-being and health of many:
“For the Cuban it is a high honor, the most humane and most altruistic task that the Revolution fulfills. The incorporation of young people is needed”.
“I have already made 82 donations. I think it is a very humanitarian gesture, because in this way I am saving many lives; every drop of blood I donate is a life I save.”
“My children are now starting to join me in donating blood, which makes me feel happy and grateful. I wish I could give even more, to help patients who need it so much.”
Voluntary blood donations are an act of humanism and solidarity; they are a way to contribute to the health and welfare of thousands of people, and in many cases, to save lives. Encouraging this altruistic practice in our country is a step forward for the benefit of those who need it.
