Radio, a glance at its history

Radio, a glance at its history

For those of us who work with a microphone, among consoles, recording studios or waiting for the sound waves to reach every home and touch lives, the arrival of February 13 takes on a different nuance: it is World Radio Day.

The background goes back to the proposal made by the Spanish Academy to UNESCO and the creation of the United Nations radio on the same date but in 1946.

To talk about radio takes us to the technology of sound transmission by Hertzian waves, to the telecommunications system where a transmitter and a receiver exchange sound signals, it also makes us think of the receiving equipment that makes it possible to tune in to a radio station and to radio as a means of communication.

Despite the fact that the ephemeris has been celebrated since 2011, the authorship of the invention of the wireless voice message transmission is a controversy between the Serbian Nikola Tesla, the electrical engineer Guillermo Marconi and even the Russian physicist Alexander Popov.

Each year, with the arrival of 2025, a theme is raised to debate and raise awareness. The 2025 advocates climate change and radio to highlight the role of the medium in the dissemination of content on the environment.

Although with the advancement of technologies and the digital era, it continues to be the channel to reach the largest number of people due to its costs and easier access anywhere in the world.

Radio and its language through four elements: music, voice, sound effects and silence build scenarios, tell stories and draw faces in the minds of listeners.

Radio and its features of topicality, immediacy, ubiquity, simultaneity and diversity demand the utmost dedication, talent and responsibility.

The media, in its eternal mission to inform, educate and entertain, seeks to insert itself in the changing world and maintain its freshness.

Those of us who share life with the radio, who give it time and place in our daily lives, the arrival of February 13, World Radio Day, means a moment of self-evaluation, a starting point, pride in a profession covered with charms and magic; magic that can only be discovered by walking behind its airwaves.
