The extensionist movement in the municipality of Contramaestre developed the corn festival, an event attended by a representation of the leading producers of this agricultural pole of Santiago. The event included several activities aimed at showing the development achieved in the production of this highly valued grain.
There is a great tradition in the production of corn in the municipality of Contramaestre, baptized for many years as the granary of the east, in this territory there is a majority of those who are dedicated to planting the grain.
But taking a step forward in increasing production, yields and quality, is the purpose of the movement of extension producers who developed their corn festival on the premises of the Cooperative Credit and Services Miguel Betancourt.
The debate among farmers was very fruitful, exchanging experiences from the use of different varieties and the results in the field, as well as the negative impact of pests and the alternatives introduced based on agroecological methods to deal with them.
During the meeting, the different varieties grown in Contramaestrian fields were presented, quality competitions were developed and elaborations based on corn, a product that should have a greater presence in the Cuban diet, were exhibited.
The meeting also recalled the figure of Fidel, who dedicated the last years of his life to the study and experimentation of grains and leguminous plants that could be incorporated to the healthy diet of the population.
With the presence of the First Secretary of the party in the municipality, comrade Yoelvis Suárez Zapata and other leaders of the UJC and the government, the most outstanding producers were stimulated, among them Yumaica Pérez who obtained the best yields with the 5461 variety.
