First edition of the Corn Festival held in Contramaestre

The first edition of the Corn Festival was held at the Miguel Betancourt Credit and Service Cooperative (CCS) in the municipality of Contramaestre in honor of the 98th anniversary of the birth of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz. An event where the legacy of the leader of the Revolution was present.

The event was attended by extension producers of the grain in the southeastern territory. The objective of the event was the exchange of knowledge and experiences of the fifty-three farmers who today cultivate and bet on new varieties and hybrids of corn. Agricultural studies that demonstrate the work of science in terms of development and food production.

The meeting was attended by Yoelvis Suárez Zapata, secretary of the Communist Party in the municipality, Karel Vázquez Intendente, representative of the extensionist movement of the province of Santiago de Cuba and members of the Union of Young Communists (UJC).

The festival had an exhibition of the different varieties of dishes made from corn, some of them with strong cultural and identity roots in the culinary art of Cuban families, especially those living in the countryside. The competitive sample evaluated the variety with the highest yield, the largest ear, the most original dish, the most typical, the best flavor and the corn with the most rows.

A special moment of the festival was the recognition of Contramaestrian producers for their unconditional work and experience in the cultivation of the grain. Two special prizes were also awarded, one to the winning coffee liqueur at the International Agricultural Fair FIAGROP 2024 and the other to the CCS Miguel Betancourt, for the quality and development of the important event.

In the central words of the event, the secretary of the party of the municipality Yoelvis Suárez Zapata, recognized the relevance of this initiative in the current context. An exchange where it was proposed as an agreement to develop the second edition of the festival in November of this year coinciding with the cold campaign.
