This Tuesday, the mountain community ¨Los Camilitos¨ of the La Torcaza Popular Council hosted the balance of the Turquino Plan of the Contramaestre Municipality to evaluate the work carried out during the first semester of 2024.
Present at this balance were Mayitsi del Toro Fonseca, Deputy to the National Assembly of People’s Power, Alba Marina Fajardo González, Secretary of the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power, Osmani García Ge, Municipal Vice-Intendant and representatives of the community.
The report presented by Michel Ramiro Ramírez Reyes, Municipal Secretary of the Turquino Plan in Contramaestre addressed achievements and difficulties that still persist in the attention to the mountain communities.
One of the issues with achievements is health:
¨In Contramaestre, attention is presented through a total of 15 Family Doctor’s offices, which are covered with the binomial of family doctor and nurse. The work of specialized consultations was reorganized and reached patients in the most intricate places of the municipality…¨.
Another topic that stood out for its consolidation in this stage of evaluation was education:
¨The municipality has 785 teachers in the area of the Turquino Plan that serves 1350 students with an optimal use by covering 100 percent of the educational needs of the mountainous territory…¨
Mirsa López del Toro, president of the municipal ANAP in Contramaestre called on the work team of Plan Turquino to have more influence in conducting concrete actions to improve the lives of the inhabitants of the mountain.
¨(…) we must look for all the necessary alternatives to get closer to all the demarcations of the Turquino Plan. Of the 34 cooperatives in the municipality of Contramaestre, 10 are in the Turquino Plan, and five of them are purely coffee growers… critically we must say that the structures that attend to the Turquino Plan are not working well… we must encourage the farmers to cultivate bananas, fruit trees… and this will allow us to have production all year round, not only for the people but also for the self-sufficiency of our own families…¨.
Mayitsi Del Toro Fonseca, Deputy to the National Assembly of People’s Power for the municipality of Contramaestre recalled the role of the mountain families in supporting our undefeated Commander Fidel Castro in the Sierra Maestra, vital for the subsequent triumph, so she emphasized the need to continue improving the life of the communities in the mountains, because that is what the Turquino Plan was conceived for:
¨At the beginning I heard that there are difficulties with the milk supply, and it is not justified in an area where there is cattle raising, and even more so with the impossibility of the country to buy powdered milk; here there is potential and it is necessary to guarantee fluid milk for all the children of Plan Turquino…There are enough reasons to improve the life of the families in the mountain, and we have to work to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of Plan Turquino.¨
The authorities present there proposed to better organize the attention to the areas of Plan Turquino to eradicate the deficiencies that still affect the good development of the proposed tasks to create the conditions in the mountain to avoid the exodus and the abandonment of farms in these rural areas.
