The UPEC towards new challenges

Cuban Journalist Association

Thinking and discovering from the stories of our complex social fabric is the main mission of hundreds of men and women grouped in a union organization that is distinguished by its capacity for collective thinking and consensus building.

The Union of Cuban Journalists (Upec) is the institution of great value facing many challenges, some of them dusty and even forgotten by the passage of time, and others that demand urgency and coherence.

Today’s Upec must overcome a changing and convulsive reality, to lead with a sense of responsibility the symbolic, cultural and counter-hegemonic struggle that institutions carry.

Connecting with a nation we all aspire to is the constant challenge, following the path of a better journalism for a people who urgently need to see themselves reflected and who demand rigor and transparency.

Boldness is the main tool of the Cuban press in search of a new journalism. Today we owe ourselves many answers to disturbing questions, but 61 years after that July 15, 1963, with the Revolution in power and us with it, what cannot change is the energy, the courage and the hope for a better Upec.

To take up again the ideas of Fidel should be a starting point, who always considered that: “error is preferable to silence in the Revolution and that dumbness, the emptiness of our positions, the paralyzing and demobilizing triumphalism or the empty propaganda, without connection with the complexity of real life, is the best gift we can give today to the neocolonizing narrative against Cuba”.

It is worth these 61 years to congratulate the initiators and continuators, to keep in the transforming laboratory of every day, those of yesterday and those of today, as a guarantee of a journalism attached to the people and that is an important and creative part in the project of the country we are building.
