Contramaestre, with the leadership of its Municipal Electoral Council will take part this May 4, 2024, at 9 a.m. in the election process for the positions of governor and vice-governor of the province of Santiago de Cuba, as agreed by the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, an event that will take place on the same date and purpose in the provinces of Matanzas, Villa Clara and Cienfuegos.
In this eastern Cuban jurisdiction, Deputy Víctor Manuel Montesino Rodríguez, as stated in the agreement no. 166-X, published in the Cuban Gazette. 166-X, published in the Official Gazette of the Republic no. 19 Extraordinary of 2024, is the one designated to preside over the voting for the positions of provincial governor and deputy governor for this territory, together with the President of the Municipal Electoral Council, in the person of Julio César García García.
The National Electoral Council is in charge of reproducing and sending to each of the delegates the corresponding biographies and photos of those nominated for these positions, no less than 72 hours prior to the date of the election; as well as guiding and organizing the voting acts in each municipality and the counting of the votes in each province, and reporting the results.
This event reinforces the institutionalism of the country and strengthens the Organs of People’s Power, since in each province there is a Provincial Government of People’s Power that works in close connection with the people, made up of a Governor and a Provincial Council.
The Constitution of the Republic of Cuba states that in order to be Governor, one must be a Cuban citizen by birth and have no other citizenship, be at least 30 years of age, reside in the province and be in full enjoyment of civil and political rights. The Vice-Governor, meanwhile, is elected in the same manner, for the same period and is subject to the same requirements as the Governor.
The Provincial Governor is the highest executive-administrative officer in his province. He is responsible to the National Assembly of People’s Power, the Council of State, the Council of Ministers and the Provincial Council, to which he reports and informs on his management, at the time and on the issues requested.
Articles 175 and 180 of the Constitution of the Republic establish that the provincial governor and vice-governor are elected by the delegates to the corresponding municipal assemblies of People’s Power, at the proposal of the President of the Republic, for a period of five years.
