In compliance with what was agreed by the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba in its call for the election of lay judges of the Courts of Justice, the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power in Contramaestre approved the candidacy that will lead this act of democracy, which takes place every five years. This time, in accordance with one of the four stages that characterize this process that the whole country is going through, scheduled to conclude in February 2024.
Maydelín de la Cruz Monteagudo, ideological politician in the secretariat of the Central de Trabajadores de Cuba in this territory, presides this candidacy commission, which is also integrated by the political cadres: Mariluz Benítez Galán, and Madelis Hechavarría Pérez, for the Federation of Cuban Women, FMC and the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, CDR, respectively, as well as Alejandro Labrada Vázquez, president of the Federation of University Students, FEU.
Members of the leaderships of other social organizations, according to the provisions of the Law on the Cuban Electoral System, are also part of the aforementioned candidacy commission, such as: Aidé Sánchez Pérez, representing the National Association of Small Farmers, ANAP, Diego Verdecia de la Cruz, for the Federation of High School Students, FEEM, and president of this organization in the territory.
Proposal of Lay Judges
After the selection of the candidates by the different sectors of the municipality, it will correspond to the candidacy commission to present the proposals to the Government Assembly and the latter, in a purely democratic exercise, attached to the legality and the Magna Carta, will proceed to their election, at the time that for this process will be convened next year.
In Cuba, lay judges participate in the administration of justice under the same conditions as their professional counterparts. Among the requirements to serve as a judge, they must be Cuban citizens, over 18 years of age, be of good social conduct and not have a law degree, since they do not seek technical elements in their work.
